Students Take Top Honors at State National Geographic Bee

A Noe Middle eighth-grader is eligible for the national finals.

April 4, 2016 – Two students from Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) took top honors Friday at the 2016 Kentucky state National Geographic Bee in Bowling Green, Ky.

Shyam Ravishankar, an eighth-grader at Noe Middle School, received first place at the annual competition, which was held at Western Kentucky University’s (WKU) Knicely Conference Center.  Second place went to Pavan Venkatakrishnan, a fifth-grader at Bowen Elementary School.

Shyam received $100 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to represent Kentucky in the national finals of the bee at National Geographic headquarters in May. .

According to National Geographic, up to 100 fourth- to eighth-graders in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Atlantic and Pacific territories, and Department of Defense Dependents Schools participated in state-level bees.

National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD will air the final round of the 2016 National Geographic Bee, moderated by humorist and journalist Mo Rocca, on May 27. It will be aired later on public television stations.
